"I'm so happy we're finally closing on this house John," Mindy said as she stepped into the living room of the small brownstone located in the Angelic Hill section of the West Angel Falls District.
"Yeah, it's nice to finally get a place of our own again after all this time," John replied. And I know how much of a history buff you are so I'm guessing you'll be spending a lot of your free time visiting some of the sites."
"Well, what little free time I can find," she said sarcastically. "After all, not being mayor is going to be taking up a lot of my time."
"You don't have to be in a hurry to find work Mel. You were patient with me after Argo Security went under so just take your time and find something that you're going to love."
"Thanks honey," Mindy said, giving John a quick kiss.
"Can you come to the garage with me for a second? I have something that I need your help moving."
"Maybe that should be my next career
Mindy Marvel Moving Company."
Mindy walked into the garage to see a red Cadillac CTS-V parked inside.
"Surprise!" he exclaimed. "You've been needing a new car since Dark Inferna torched your old one, so I figured now is a good time to upgrade to the sportier model.
"John, this is amazing, but how can we afford it?"
"I got a great deal and the salesman knocked a few thousand if he could get an autographed picture of you. He said if you did an appearance at the dealership, we could get it for free
"I'd rather make the payments each month," she replied.
"Now for the second surprise," he added, grabbing Mindy's hand and leading her up the stairs.
"These are the times I wish I had x-ray vision," Mindy deadpanned.
John opened the door and sitting in the middle of the room was a wooden crib.
"What's this?" she asked, confused.
"A few weeks ago, Olga responded to a fire call. When she got there, the mother was dead from a bullet to the head and she couldn't save the father either."
"That's horrible," Mindy responded.
"But, thank God, she was able to locate their infant daughter and rescue her before she was burned alive. Well, I was working the overnight shift at the station that night and Olga brought her in
I guess she thought the AFPD was the best place. Anyway, Department of Children and Family Services couldn't come until the morning so I kept her company until then. Mel, you should've seen her. She was so calm, even though she was in this strange place surrounded by people she's never seen before. "
"I've been going to see her every few days and talking to DCFS. Apparently, they haven't been able to contact either side of the family so it looks like she's going to be placed in a foster home or orphanage soon."
John held both of Mindy's hands in his and brought her closer to the crib which had a picture of the baby girl inside. He picked it up and placed in her palm.
"Her name's Cecilia. Mel, I know we both have strange schedules, with the police department and with your responsibilities to this city as Mindy Marvel. I haven't been as sure of something since the day I met you, and when I held her that same feeling came over me. And, when you meet her, I know you'll feel the same way."
"So, Mel, I have one question for you
are you ready to be a mom?
Mindy's eyes welled up as she looked up at her husband.
"Yes," she said as she floated up to meet her husband's gaze. "Absolutely, yes!"
